Many people may not know it, but cannabis branding has a history behind it. Back in the sixties and seventies, the international cannabis scene consisted of herb brands named after the geographic areas from whence they were cultivated, strains such as Thai Stick, Panama Red, Columbian, Afghani and Michoacán.
Then along came the eighties and early nineties when regional brands started popping up in cultivation hot spots around the nation. That decade gave us the first generation of modern cannabis. These were to become strains that are commonplace in the industry today such as Haze, Northern Lights, White Widow, Skunk, Blueberry and Bubblegum. (Links to the research used to compose this page are included in our news and resource page.) These strains are the true old-school cannabis classics. Here in Washington state, one is hard pressed to find a medicinal cannabis user who is not familiar with classics like Northern Lights, White Widow or Skunk.
A decade later, in this mid 90s, the second generation of strains began to become popular. These strains offered higher yields, higher potency and more flavor than their predecessors. Out of tis proliferation came some of the more recent classics we have come to enjoy and love today like The Cough™, Super Silver Haze, Blue Dream and Silver Haze. As a matter of tachonomy, here is a quick run down of some genetic heritage of some popular strains. The Cough™ is a Northern Lights by Silver Haze cross. Silver Haze is a cross between Haze, Northern Lights and Skunk. The Super Silver Haze is a Silver Haze, Northern Lights and Skunk cross. The Blue Dream, really popular at the moment, is a Super Silver Haze by Blueberry cross. As you can see, many of the Cannabis Cup winners, like the Super Silver Haze, came from the classics like The Cough™.
It is important to note that, in regards to The Cough™, no further genetic branches have been created. There are some faux Cough strains out there by a few seed banks, but they are just that, fakes or otherwise unsuccessful attempts to create The Cough™ with different genetics such as the Raspberry Cough and Strawberry Cough. Please, kind user, trust us when we say that these strains are in no way shape or form true Cough strains. Accept no substitutes. There are no seeds of The Cough™ on the market. There are no starts of The Cough™ on the market. The Cough™ stands alone in this regards. You will not find millions of bastardized and crossed versions of The Cough™ out in the wild. We believe that old-school genetics like The Cough™ need to be preserved in their entirety. |
